–New Technology Gives Customers Immediate Access to Their Card upon Opening an Account–

PORTLAND, Maine–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Thanks to new technology that TD Banknorth is piloting in dozens of branches, customers now have instant access to a working debit card upon opening an account.

TD Banknorth announced today a pilot program to offer customers a flat-panel Visa® debit card immediately upon opening a personal or business checking account at a participating branch. The cards are permanent and can be used immediately upon receipt, eliminating the wait time for mailed cards and personal identification numbers (PINs). This convenience is also available to existing customers who need to replace a lost or stolen debit card.

The company is the first major financial services institution in the U.S. to utilize the state-of-the-art technology that enables instant digital printing of non-embossed debit cards in branch.

“Customers have told us that waiting for a new debit card to come in the mail is a hassle. So we responded by introducing a technology that gives them a fully-functioning debit card and PIN in just minutes,” said Matt Chevalier, senior vice president of deposit products for TD Banknorth. “The flat-panel debit card works just like a traditional embossed card and is just as secure, and the customer can use it right away at ATMs and retailers. This is one more way TD Banknorth is working to eliminate the hassles of banking for our customers.”

TD Banknorth is partnering with Dynamic Card Solutions of Englewood, Colo., to pilot the debit card technology in 46 branches across the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions. TD Banknorth plans to expand the program to its current network of nearly 600 branches in eight Northeastern states by end of summer 2008.
